The Skidian Chronicles http://scifibookshop.co.nz The sci-fi novels of Keith Fenwick Sat, 02 Mar 2019 19:55:45 +0000 en-NZ hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.4 Crowd Funding Campaign http://scifibookshop.co.nz/crowd-funding-campaign/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/crowd-funding-campaign/#respond Sat, 02 Mar 2019 19:55:45 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=734 Hi everyone,

I have created a crowd funding campaign on Pledgeme to help pay for the print run of books I did late last year. Click here to go to the campaign page.

I am pretty hopeful of success as before I even launch the campaign $70 has already been pledged!

This will help fund the printing of more books to sell in bookshops around town, in markets and to use in promotions.  I want to raise $500 and anything extra will go towards a book signing session I plan to hold in the next few months.

There are rewards available for every level of pledge. Each $5 increments gets an ebook in the EPUB format. $15 gets all four books in the series. $25 gets a signed paperback version of the first book in the series, $40 gets any two books in the series and $60 gets all four books. Each paperback comes with an ebook.

A pledge of $100 gets all four books, and a couple of beers in a watering hole TBA- the offer of a beer is in Auckland only.

An update from the nerve centre of the Skidian Chronicles. http://scifibookshop.co.nz/an-update-from-the-nerve-centre-of-the-skidian-chronicles/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/an-update-from-the-nerve-centre-of-the-skidian-chronicles/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2019 23:14:04 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=731
Hello from the nerve centre of the Skidian Chronicles creative department.

Since my last update I am close to completing the first draft of the latest novel in the Skidian Chronicles series. At one hundred and thirty five thousand words plus, the end is in sight!.

As I toil away on the latest book and getting to the next level in the writing game, transitioning from being a sci fi author with a day job to writing full time, and getting my books into the hands of as many readers as I can, I have undertaken extensive research via Google into to the steps and actions one needs to take to achieve success.

Consequently, I’ve become an online target for a series of adds promoting masterclass sessions undertaken by established authors who will arm me with sure fire steps to grow my audience and make shitloads of money in the process. The cynical section of my brain suspects this isn’t an altruistic exercise to share hard won knowledge and experience. Rather, it’s an exercise in generating another income stream in case the book sales dry up.

I reckon I’ve learnt a few things myself about this game and I see an opportunity to run counter masterclasses in realism. I’m convinced that luck plays a huge part in whether an author makes it into the big time. For example, there are many good writers, penning good books, garage and cover bands blasting out great songs, and many sportspeople making up the numbers in a team who will, no matter how hard they try, never get to showcase their talents on a national or international stage without a lucky break.

History is littered with people who have been handed an unexpected opportunity which has transformed their lives. Three years ago, who would ever have believed Jacinda Ardern would become Prime Minister of New Zealand in 2017, or that there would be so much winning in the United States of America? As to the latter, I did of course predict this, and if you read The Lifeboat, the third book in the series you will see how this came about. Though
sometimes the truth appears much stranger than fiction.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still having a crack at creating a point of difference and getting people interested in my writing.  So this week I have set up a crowdfunding project to raise some cash to go towards paying for the books I printed late last year. There are various prizes, including copies of the books and me buying a lucky ‘pledgee’ a beer. Check here for details. I have high hopes for this campaign, I haven’t officially launched it yet and I already have pledges!

As a prize for having read this far, for all of you who haven’t yet bought the second book in the series called, you guessed it, The Second Coming. Click here for a free EPUB version.

Happy reading.

January 2019 update http://scifibookshop.co.nz/january-2019-update/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/january-2019-update/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 21:27:34 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=723 It’s been a while since my last update and this list has grown significantly in that time, so here are a few words of questionable wisdom and a welcome to all my new subscribers. If you are new to the series one of my fans recently described my writing  style as Hitch Hikers Guide meets Guardians of the Galaxy meets Crocodile Dundee. (or if you prefer Barry Crump.)

After a complete break from writing over Christmas I started to pick up the pace last week after a patchy effort the week prior. My excuse is I was a little discombobulated after taking a tumble off my mountain bike and breaking my thumb. In hindsight I might have had a slight concussion as well, but it was more likely a severe case of back to work-itis which slowed me down. Luckily as a right hander it was my left thumb, so as a three-finger typist it doesn’t slow me down too much. However, not having full use of the digit makes a surprising number of activities a little awkward to complete. But this is not the time or place to enlighten people with the gory details.

This week I cracked the hundred-thousand-word mark on the 5th book in the series and am the aim is to be ready to publish this time next year. Once I have got to the end of the first draft, I will be looking for beta readers and will churning out advanced copies and other freebies for my subscribers.

Over the break I spent a lot of time thinking about book marketing and how to create a point of difference to get my books into the hands of more readers. Price doesn’t appear to be the main driver. I have consumed advice from various experts and successful authors, some of whom seem to spend more time sharing their expertise than writing. I did wonder if that’s where I should focus my energy, sharing my experiences. However, in my case, it would be a cautionary tale of sharing lessons about what not to do! Here are a few examples:

  • The title of the first book in the series, Skid seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect I should have picked another title.
  • I setup a Facebook Group to engage with fans and promptly neglected to confirm members to the group. No wonder I have very little interaction there.
  • Rather embarrassingly, for some reason I decided to edit the automated welcome message that is dispatched to all new subscribers to this list and didn’t save it – so all new subscribers didn’t get the link to the free downloads.
  • Setting up adds with links to the wrong book on Amazon
  • Not following my editors advice.
  • Getting the pricing out of whack on my Shopify site – (I’ll still do a buy three get one free deal for physical copies)

It’s a wonder I sell any books at all!

Happy reading.

Hello from Skid – Christmas reading options. http://scifibookshop.co.nz/hello-from-skid-christmas-reading-options/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/hello-from-skid-christmas-reading-options/#respond Thu, 13 Dec 2018 08:03:20 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=719 Hello from Skid

In my last update I spoke about my identity crisis and the inner turmoil caused by my confusion about the genre I am writing in. More than one person has since reached out and described my writing as Barry Crump (a trail blazing New Zealand writer who gave a voice to our own stories) or Crocodile Dundee meets Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. I think this is an apt description of my style.

Seasonal offers
Christmas offers the opportunity to chillout and relax after a tough year with a good book or two, especially in this part of the world many where many of us have an extended break at this time of year. With this in mind I want to do my bit and offer you a decent read and some light relief at a cost which won’t break the bank.

To that end the third book in the Skidian Chronicles series – the Lifeboat is available on Amazon for US$0.99 for the next week.. It can be download here. The Lifeboat.

For those of you who like the feel of paper I have also dropped the price for the hardcopy books to NZ$12 plus freight. I’ll also do a buy three get one free deal until Christmas. For potential buyers in NZ there is still time to buy a few books and get them before the big guy comes down the chimney. The books can be ordered here.

Blurb for The Lifeboat
In The Lifeboat a huge killer asteroid appears to be on a collision course with earth. However, it soon transpires the asteroid has been sent on its way by the Skidian first people who have uploaded themselves to a celestial version of the cloud and now define themselves as Transcendents.

The Transcendents have a plan for humanity which doesn’t include an asteroid strike killing us all off.

An excerpt from my favourite review.
The plot is rich and interesting with plenty of chuckles given the parallels with current world politics and indeed, parallels to politicians from all facets of life.Introducing the ultimate puppet masters, the Transcendants, the Lifeboat goes further to explaining our world history and our parallel off-world history. If you’ve ever worked in large organisations, or with systems and processes, you will enjoy the pragmatism and insights of our anti-hero Bruce.”

Happy reading.

Hello from Skid – Bruce’s December 2018 update http://scifibookshop.co.nz/hello-from-skid-bruces-december-2018-update/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/hello-from-skid-bruces-december-2018-update/#respond Fri, 07 Dec 2018 21:40:33 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=717 Hi everyone, and a special welcome to the new subscribers to this update.

Over the last few weeks I have been playing with different types of adverts and advertising platforms. Whatever I am doing seems to be working as I have had a nice wee spike in sales, as well as giving away a significant number of the first book in the Skidian Chronicles series.

Amazon sales dashboard sky scraper.

As part of this process I have also undertaken some analysis of the genre channels I am selling in and reviewing the tags I am using in Amazon book description settings. This investigation has had some surprising results, leading me to experience a perplexing identity crisis. Imagine my surprise and the resultant discombobulation when I discovered by a process of elimination, three of my books rank higher in searches for humor and satire than they do for science fiction! To cap this off the other day I received a comment from an avid fan they enjoyed the dystopian themes in my books.

As I write this newsletter, I am not sure whether I should describe myself as a science fiction writer or a satirist. Clearly, based on this analysis I reckon I need to re-think how I describe and present my writing style. As a result of this research I have decided to change all my book taglines and genre descriptions on Amazon to reference satire and humor as an experiment to see if this drives more book sales.

For those of you who are waiting for the fifth book in the series,(everyone reading this newsletter I hope) I have cracked the 95000 word mark and have got to the point in the process where I have laid the groundwork for the story I really want to tell. I think. I never really know how it’s all going to end until I get there, and although my target is 150000 words for a first draft, who knows where this is actually going to end.

In terms of weekly writing targets I have managed to hit most of them until now, but it’s going to be a struggle in the lead up to Christmas given how busy I am in the day job.

Well, that’s enough for now. I hope you all have a great Christmas, enjoy the festive season and a good book or two.

Happy reading.

For those of you who have enjoyed the first book in the series, the Kindle version of the second book in the series, The Second Coming, is still reduced in price to USD$0.99. (Note that sometimes the display price is slightly different for some reason– but the actual, buy price should be USD $0.99.)

Hi everyone, and a special welcome to the new subscribers to this newsletter. For those of you who have enjoyed the first book in the series, the Kindle version of the second book in the series, The Second Coming, is still reduced in price to USD$0.99. (Note that sometimes the display price is slightly different for some reason– but the actual, buy price should be USD $0.99.)

For the past few weeks I have had the man flu, which as everyone knows is the very worst kind. This has resulted in a failure to hit my (self-imposed) my writing targets for the last two weeks. However, I rallied bravely in the last few days and wasn’t far off last week’s target. Still, based on the current word count of touch under seventy-five thousand I am almost half way through my first draft of the fifth book in the Skidian series, tentatively entitled The Island.

Overall, I am actually pretty pleased about the progress I have made in the last three months. Imagine what kind of output I would have if I could afford to write full time! There’s still a long way to go. I have a folder full of notes which go to some length in outlining the subject matter I want to cover, which I have hardly dipped into yet.

Recently I have also been spending quite a chunk of time and energy on marketing to drum up some consistent sales. I have focused most of my energy on driving sales on Amazon because it’s the biggest bookshop in the world with the biggest audience. But recently some odd things have been happening at Amazon which makes me question whether I should focus my efforts elsewhere. There seems to have been an issue with reporting and the way books are presented to potential purchasers. Also, Amazon appears to be driving people to Amazon national or regional sites to purchase Ebooks, but not hardcopies, which seems rather strange. If you see the following message ‘This title is not currently available for purchase’ for any Kindle book you are looking to buy on Amazon.com you will need to switch to your regional Amazon web address to buy it.

Luckily there are other options, including buying physical books and Ebooks directly from me, and my ebooks are also listed on Smashwords. Books on Smashwords can be download in a variety of formats which is quite useful if you don’t have a Kindle.

If people want to buy a box set of physical books off me from my Shopify site I’ll do a buy three books and get one free deal. These books will make fantastic gifts for that difficult to buy for scifi fan in everyone’s family for Christmas. You’ll have to PM me to take advantage of this deal.

Happy reading

Skidian Chronicles update http://scifibookshop.co.nz/skidian-chronicles-update/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/skidian-chronicles-update/#respond Fri, 26 Oct 2018 22:56:10 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=707 Hi everyone, its Friday night again in this part of the world and I have a few moments to myself to sit back, have a beer or two and reflect on the last few weeks, and more importantly, my secret plan to become a best selling writer.

I snuck away early from work which gave me a head start on my weekend chores. This enables me to free up time over the weekend to work on the first and pretty rough draft of my labour of love which has now cracked the sixty-thousand-word mark.

These chores include mowing the lawn, vacuuming the house, putting the washing on, and preparing dinner for she who must be obeyed. I cleaned the kitchen and the bathrooms and did the ironing before I went to work. By completing these tasks I have created myself a small window of opportunity to formulate my next grand marketing scheme, before I receive further orders. The grand scheme which is going to turn me into a bestselling author and generate a six-figure income in no time at all.

In terms of marketing I’m doing all the right things, following the three step, five step, and twenty five step plans guaranteed to ensure success and wealth. Because I am so focused on these plans I am confident I will be able to convince she who must be obeyed I can give up the day job and focus on writing. Soon. Presently. Some time in the near future.

Back in the real world, I have reduced the price of the the kindle versions of all the books for sale on Amazon for the next week. The first three books in the series are now US$0.99 (Skid, The First ChronicleThe Second ComingThe Lifeboat,) and I have reduced the price of The Colonists to US$1.99. If you purchase any of these books it would be great if you could review them for me.

If people want to buy a box set of physical books off me from my Shopify site I’ll do a buy three books and get one free deal. These books will make fantastic stocking fillers for Christmas. You’ll have to PM me to take advantage of this deal.

It may seem odd to reduce the price on Amazon only, but this is the channel I really want people to use to purchase ebooks so the books can be reviewed which will encourage others to buy the books.

Well, it was Friday night when I started writing this update, but I got distracted with a few beers, and it is now early Saturday morning in this part of the world. Given I have a global audience it could be any time of the day where you are.

Firstly, welcome to all the new subscribers to this newsletter, and thanks for downloading my books. I have seen an uptick in sales, which I am attributing at least partly to my subscribers purchasing other books in the series. It was also great to literally bump into one of my fans when I was out for a walk in the local botanical gardens.a couple of weekends ago.

Subscribers who haven’t already downloaded the electronic versions of the first two books in the series can navigate to my Shopify (KeithFenwick.com) bookstore and download them for free from there using the discount code Keithfenwick. Note – the discount is applied when you click on the Checkout button, you will get an error message if you click on the PayPal button. The discount is valid until the 20th of October.

Since my last newsletter there are a few things to share. I have been experimenting with different channels to grow my subscriber base, some work, some don’t, some work for a short while and then go off the boil. I have run Google and Facebook adds which require constant refreshing and adjustments. In recent times I have discovered some other channels, Voracious Readers and Book Bub, and I am sure there are others I can hook into as well. All in all, my subscriber base is growing which is what my marketing efforts are aimed at.

In my last newsletter I announced that I had printed books locally and was planning a book signing to help me sell some of them. Unfortunately, the year is slipping away rapidly, and I am running out of time to set something up. The venues we are looking at using are booked for months ahead. At this sage I will probably be looking to set something up next year. Feel free to order some physical copies to fill the Christmas reading requirements of friends and family in the meantime.

Work on the latest book in the series is going well. I have managed to achieve and generally exceed my target of ten hours a week working on all aspects of writing and marketing. I am pretty pleased with myself for maintain this discipline, but it is going to be a struggle to maintain this over the next few months as work commitments for the silly season ramp up. The first draft is already at 530000 odd words in just two months. I have a target of about 150000 thousand in mind so at this rate I will have the first draft completed early in the new year and will possibly start to serialize it for my subscribers for feedback.

Happy reading

Skidian Chronicles Update http://scifibookshop.co.nz/__trashed/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/__trashed/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 02:31:26 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=692 Its been almost a month or since my last update and I have a few things to share.

Thanks to everyone who has download Skid The First Skidian Chronicle, and thanks especially to all those people who taken the time to let me know how much you have enjoyed reading it. I have noticed a spike in sales for the next book in the series, The Second Coming and I have reduced the price on that book to USD$0.99 on Amazon for the next week for anyone who wants a copy. I hope you enjoy these books enough to read the next two in the series, The Lifeboat and The Colonists.

Several months ago I created a Shopify shop to sell books to people who don’t want to purchase from the big players which is also seeing more traffic. I am using this site to sell hard copies to people who want a physical book and want to buy from me directly. I have been surprised by how many people still prefer a physical book to read. My bookshop is also a cheaper option for people to purchase hardcopies locally, as purchases from Amazon and other international stores are relatively expensive to ship to this part of the world

On Friday I picked up my first consignment of locally printed books, and  I now have a about 140 odd books sitting in my office I need to sell. The Command Authority and I are going to start visiting local Independent book sellers and start promoting the series in earnest.

Now I have the books I will focus on organising a book signing session, we are still looking for a suitable venue. If I can’t locate a suitable location in the next few weeks, I will have to delay it until after the silly season is over because I will be focusing on my day job in December.

Finally, I am well underway with the fifth book in the series. I have set myself a publication target of January 2020, but progress is good at the moment so I might be able to bring that date forward.

Irregular Update http://scifibookshop.co.nz/irregular-update/ http://scifibookshop.co.nz/irregular-update/#respond Wed, 12 Sep 2018 06:05:53 +0000 http://scifibookshop.co.nz/?p=687 Welcome to the new subscribers to this mailing list and thanks for signing up. I hope those of you who have downloaded Skid are enjoying the book and are keen to read the rest of the series. To that end, for the next week or so, I have reduced the price for electronic version of the second book in the series – The Second Coming available on Amazon and Smashwords  for US $0.99.

In other news I am arranging to have my books printed locally so I will be able to sell hard copies at a reasonable price and still be able to make a little cash in the process. After the raging success of my first book signing, where at least half the people who said they were turning up actually did.I am planning another session here in the big smoke (Auckland, NZ). If you are in this part of the world I am aiming to run this before the end of October and the start of the silly season in my day job.

Printing the books locally will also mean all those people who still like the feel of a book can purchase from me direct, a little cheaper than from Amazon. I hope to sell out my first print run at least. If I don’t you know what friends and family are going to receive for Christmas, birthdays and special occasions for the rest of my days.

For those looking for their next great read, I am well underway with a fifth book in a similar universe. Spoiler alert, world affairs just keep on giving in terms of subject matter.

Finally, in the past I have written the first draft of my books in long hand, but this time round I am typing from the start. Those of you who have witnessed my typing will be having a laugh at my expense right about now.!

Anyhow, I have set a target publishing date of January 2020. However, at the rate I am going it could well be sooner. After that I will be helping she who must be obeyed to bring a book about immigration to life.
